Why the Devil will Flee from You

“4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, ‘The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously’? 6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.’ 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:4-7 New King James Version).

Why would the devil flee from me? This is the fallen angel who talked with GOD and was given permission by GOD to bring down calamity upon Job, and tempt Jesus the Christ Himself! The same angel who was in heaven and decided to exalt himself above GOD! That’s pretty bold! He doesn’t care about facing off with GOD and the heavenly armies so who am I that he should flee from me?

Let’s start at verse six. GOD gives us more grace. This is in the context of when we are liking the things of the world too much. We are beginning to place them above GOD, and like verse four points out; we become enemies of GOD when we do this. Verse five goes on to say that the Holy Spirit in us yearns jealously for us. He wants us and only us. He wants all of our attention.

We’re out here being adulterers and adulteresses, being friends with the world and loving the world more than GOD, cheating on GOD; but guess what? Verse six! GOD gives more grace! That word more comes from the Greek word ‘megas’ meaning great huge amounts of grace, big grace, more than enough grace (reminds me of a church named Greater Grace Temple here in Detroit, MI); GOD gives greater grace! Bless HIS holy name!

It is in this context that James says GOD resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble; and from here we get to verse seven that tells us if we submit to GOD then resist the devil he will flee from us. That word humble means pressed down, to get low, low in attitude; to have faithful devotion to GOD. That means that we put GOD and what GOD wants before what we want. Mmmmmm, that’s good.

Once we are humble it is now easy to submit. Submit in the Greek comes from two words, one meaning under, and the other meaning to arrange in order like soldiers. So, when we submit to GOD, we are presenting ourselves like a soldier under the command of their superior ready to do whatever we are told. We are making ourselves subject and obedient to GOD.

Now, remember; we were only able to submit because we humbled ourselves and got low. In that low position, we heard GOD say stay right there, I got you. Now we are able to resist the devil not in our strength, but in GOD’s strength! So, when we read resist the devil and he will flee from you; he’s not fleeing from us, but he sees the GOD in us! And the only reason he saw the GOD in us is because we got out the way. Once we bent down low and worshipped GOD, submitted to GOD; the devil saw WHO was standing behind us the whole time!

But because we want to stand up and try to face problems on our own; the devil is fighting us all day having a field day just teeing off on us. All up in the face we’re getting hit. Left hooks, right hooks; we’re just taking a beating. The whole time GOD is saying man, stop being proud! I don’t give grace to the proud. I resist the proud. Ima stand there and let you be a punching bag because you're doing it on your own. But as soon as we humble ourselves, c’mon! GOD says Ima give you grace!

Remember 2 Corinthians 12:8 where GOD says MY grace is sufficient for you. My power is made perfect in your weakness! So, first comes the grace, then the power. The grace is the power. It is the favor and blessings of GOD. It is the strength to do what we can’t do on our own. Grace opens the way for GOD’s power to rest upon us!

So, look. GOD gives grace to the humble. We humbled ourselves. We bowed down. The devil saw GOD behind us and he’s fleeing. So, my thing is I don’t ever want the devil to see me! Ever! I want him to stay in a constant state of fleeing. I want the devil to stay in a constant state of being on the run when he sees me because he doesn’t see me anymore. Why? Because I stay down low. I don’t need to stand up. I stay low. I stay humbled. I stay submitted to GOD; because as long as I stay low and stay submitted to GOD, GOD is the ONE resisting the devil! It’s not me.

Doing Things Our Way

Look at verse one, “Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?” (James 4:1 NKJV). If I stay humble and submitted I don’t have lust/desires for pleasure in my members because I let the Spirit lead me. Some of you are saying come on brother Conner. We’re human. We all have desires for pleasure. Yes, our flesh does have desires, but look at what James said. These desires war in our members. That means that we are fighting within ourselves to get what we want. The desires are having the rule over us instead of us ruling our desires. We were never meant to be ruled by our flesh.

We were created as rulers. “26 Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ “ (Genesis 1:26 NKJV). First of all, we are made in GOD’s image. That means we move like HE moves, we operate like HE operates. In Hebrew, that word image means if GOD cast a shadow it would look like us. Let that sink in.

Who rules over GOD? No one. Likewise, nothing should rule over us, least of all our fleshly passions that come from satan’s worldly influence. We were commanded by GOD to have dominion over the earth; that means even this earth body that we are made of. Each of us should rule over ourselves, not the other way around (see 1 Thessalonians 4:4). If I am submitted to the Holy Spirit, I have the power to rule over myself. Again, it’s not me, but the Holy Spirit in me influencing me to do the things of GOD and not what my flesh wants (see Galatians 5:16, 24).

Now, look at verse two, “2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.” (James 4:2 NKJV). Once again, we didn’t ask GOD for anything. We’re going after what we want on our own, and we end up lusting for it, killing for it, fighting for it, and starting wars over it because we’re going after it on our own instead of submitting those things we want to GOD. What does that mean? How do I submit what I want to GOD?

4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4 NKJV). That means just chill back and let GOD take care of you. Give GOD the request. Ask HIM for it according to HIS will and 1 John 5:14-15 says that HE will give it to us if it is according to HIS will. HE already has it for us. That means that we must find what we need in the bible, ask for it, and GOD will give it to us. We are to just sit back and let GOD bring it to us, not go out and get it on our own. If we were going to do that then why ask? Trust GOD to bring you what’s best for you at the right time.

Verse three, “3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” (James 4:3 NKJV). Once again, if I submit myself to GOD, if I’m humble before GOD then I’m not going to ask amiss. Remember, if we ask according to the word we get it. So, that means instead of asking amiss so that we miss the mark; we ask in alignment, we ask in righteousness, we ask in obedience. We ask according to the word of GOD, and if we ask according to the word of GOD we’ll get it.

Verse four, “4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4 NKJV). If we are submitted to GOD. If we have humbled ourselves and allowed GOD’s Spirit to lead us, then we aren’t friends with the world. Which means we’re not GOD’s enemy.

More Grace

Now we get to verse six where GOD gives us more grace. James tells us that GOD resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. We have qualified and made ourselves available for GOD’s grace now that we are obedient and submitted to HIM. We are now counted among those who are humble because we trust GOD over ourselves and lean not to our own understanding, acknowledging GOD in all of our ways trusting HIM to direct our path (see Proverbs 3:5-6). It takes humility to do that. We have humbled ourselves once we trust GOD over what we think is best.

3 Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3 NKJV). We give the responsibility to GOD. Here GOD, you take it. You do it. We submit to GOD. Again, “5 Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” (Psalm 37:5 NKJV). Give GOD the responsibility for your path in life, and HE will bring it to pass. That is humbling ourselves.

We’re saying, “GOD, I can’t do this without you! You can do this; I can’t! GOD, I need you! Here’s my dreams, here’s my goals, here’s my desires, here’s my wants, here’s my needs.” Like the scripture says:

“2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:2-5 NKJV).

LORD, I ask that you heal my diseases in the name of Jesus. Your word says it. LORD, I ask that you renew my youth like the eagle’s. Just like it sheds its feathers and feels and flies like a new bird allow me to be renewed as I shed my old ways of thinking, my negative thoughts, negative emotions. Fill my spirit afresh with your anointing satisfying my mouth with good things. Let the Holy Spirit fill me to overflowing that I may be as carefree and energetic as a child no matter my age, confident that all of my needs are taken care of. Your word says it! And we have it, in Jesus’ name.

And like my bishop reminds us, GOD may not answer us the way we expect. If HE doesn’t take the disease away then HE’ll heal a certain part of us that will allow us to work through it, to be stable through it. HE may not heal us on this side like we want, but GOD will heal us in such a way that we are able to maintain along with it.

GOD is GOD. HE is sovereign. HE chooses how HE wants to do things and when. Our job is to ask and believe that it will work out for our good because we love GOD and have been called by HIM according to HIS purposes (see Romans 8:28). GOD, however, will not allow us to be defeated. We will be victorious in the midst of the disease, or the pain, or the situation. Whatever GOD decides to do, it will work out for our good.

We have to feed ourselves nothing but the word. We can’t feed ourselves the world. We won’t run right. Like putting orange juice in your car’s fuel tank. Your car isn’t going to run right, if at all. Or, like a virus infecting a computer. It won’t run right. It will not be able to perform the operations that it was built to perform. Likewise, we are spiritual beings in a flesh body. We feed our body proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. We feed our spirits the word, not the viruses of the world’s way of thinking. If we do not feed on the word, our flesh will grow strong and our spirit will grow weak. And this will lead to us malfunctioning in the earth. We will believe the lies of the enemy that tell us we are victims when we are victorious already through Jesus the Christ (see 1 Corinthians 15:57).

Therefore, once we have submitted ourselves to GOD, once we resist the devil he will flee from us because it’s all GOD now. We’re operating off of Holy Ghost fuel. So, when the devil looks at us he’s like nawww don’t even go near that one. They’re submitted to Jesus. Go to the next one. Don’t even get close cause if GOD puts HIS hands on you it’s over with. That’s what’s up.

That word flee in Greek means to run away or vanish, to escape so as to avoid a threat, to get out of the way. Matthew 8:29-32 tells the story of how the evil spirits were afraid Jesus was going to torture them so they asked permission to leave the men they were tormenting and go into a herd of pigs. The devil and his servants don't want to be anywhere near Jesus. They get paranoid and take flight. We have this same Jesus in us when we get out the way and let Him shine instead of us.

Be blessed, family. Go forth in the power of GOD today and everyday. Submit yourself to the LORD and live a life of victory. “23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

How to be Saved

Romans 10: 9-13

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (KJV).

9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. 11 As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” 12 Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (NLT).

Say the welcoming word to God—“Jesus is my Master”—embracing, body and soul, God’s work of doing in us what he did in raising Jesus from the dead. That’s it. You’re not “doing” anything; you’re simply calling out to God, trusting him to do it for you. That’s salvation. With your whole being you embrace God setting things right, and then you say it, right out loud: “God has set everything right between him and me!” 11-13 Scripture reassures us, “No one who trusts God like this—heart and soul—will ever regret it.” It’s exactly the same no matter what a person’s religious background may be: the same God for all of us, acting the same incredibly generous way to everyone who calls out for help. “Everyone who calls, ‘Help, God!’ gets help. (MSG).

Romans 5:8

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (KJV)

8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (NLT)

It is your belief that saves you, family. If you believe, you will speak what you believe and not be ashamed or embarrassed to do so, whether you are alone or among others. Simply talk to GOD. Say aloud to God:

“I confess all my sin, known and unknown, and ask You, GOD to forgive me. I believe Jesus was born of a virgin, crucified, died for my sins, and rose from the dead. I want Jesus to come into my heart to make me new in Him. I believe Jesus is Lord over my life and over everything that exists. Thank You, GOD for Your forgiveness. Thank You, Jesus, for making me Your own. Amen.”

You are now saved. You may not feel different or you may. Just know that the internal change is taking place once you uttered that prayer in faith. Day by day, you will begin to be transformed into whom GOD wants and created you to be. You will care more about the things of GOD than your own personal desires, and you will want to share the word of GOD when you have the opportunity. Begin to read your bible daily, and learn about GOD's will for your life. If you are not already a member of a local church, I encourage you to pray and allow GOD to guide you to the right fellowship for you. The pastor will help you grow in your gifts and talents so that you can begin to use them for GOD’s glory, and you and the other members will encourage and help each other along this journey with GOD.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
