A Different Take on the Commands of GOD: How Following GOD Gets You What You Really Want.

What I really want? What is it that I really want? Do I even know? The bible tells me, “ Man's goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way (Proverbs 20:24)?” It also says, “O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps (Jeremiah 10:23).” Lastly, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death (Proverbs 16:25).

This tells me that I don’t really know what I want, but GOD does. It follows that I should seek HIM for the things that I’m asking for, and see what HE has to say about them. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

Am I willing to go to GOD and be taken care of by HIM? Am I willing to take my deepest desires to HIM, and allow HIM to minister to me? Am I willing to hear what the LORD has to say about what I want, then allow HIM to give me what HE wants, what HE knows is best for me, to even tell me no, or not right now? Will I let GOD be a Father to me, and take care of me better than I know how to take care of myself? That is what it means to delight in the LORD.

Be blessed as you read the scriptures below in the Message version. Let GOD’s word minister to your soul as you follow what HE tells you. May your time with HIM be blessed on this day as you take every concern you have to your heavenly Father in prayer.

Psalm 119: 97-105 (MSG)

Oh, how I love all you’ve revealed;

I reverently ponder it all the day long.

Your commands give me an edge on my enemies;

they never become obsolete.

I’ve even become smarter than my teachers

since I’ve pondered and absorbed your counsel.

I’ve become wiser than the wise old sages

simply by doing what you tell me.

I watch my step, avoiding the ditches and ruts of evil

so I can spend all my time keeping your Word.

I never make detours from the route you laid out;

you gave me such good directions.

Your words are so choice, so tasty;

I prefer them to the best home cooking.

With your instruction, I understand life;

that’s why I hate false propaganda.

By your words I can see where I’m going;

they throw a beam of light on my dark path.

GOD knows the end from the beginning. Isaiah 46 says, “10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. This means that when I cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel, GOD does. GOD is with me at the beginning of the trial, and at the end when I come out without ever leaving my side. His omnipresence causes HIM to be everywhere at once. Hallelujah!

This means that when GOD gives me a command, because HE knows the end and the best way for me to get there; I follow what HE says so that I can get to where I want to be. That can be anywhere: financial freedom, marriage, health, career, peace, whatever prayer request you have, whatever dream for your life, GOD knows how to best get you there. All we have to do is follow and do what HE tells us to do.

The commands of the LORD are created to give us the desires of our hearts. If our hearts line up with HIM, we will get everything that HE has for us (Psalm 37:4). Instead of looking at GOD’s orders as rules to keep us from getting what we want, as putting unwanted boundaries around us, as seemingly telling us no to our deepest desires; what they’re really doing is guiding us ever closer to HIM so that we will know HIS heart for us.

We were promised the abundant life (John 10:10), we just have to receive it on GOD’s terms and not our own. We have to accept that GOD knows what is best for us more than we do. We have to come to that place where we know GOD loves us and desires to bestow upon us every blessing imaginable (Psalm 16:11).

In the meantime, let’s not forget that it’s not always about us. Through us, GOD is getting HIS will accomplished on earth. If we are being told no, or not right now; not only is that GOD’s best for us, it’s also affecting someone else according to GOD’s will.

Joseph said it best. Look at all the trials that he went through. Think about all the different ways that he could have reacted to his misfortune, but he stayed obedient to GOD, put his trust in the LORD, and remained godly through it all. Look at how his situation turned out for the good of not only himself but others as well. Genesis 50, “20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.” No matter what, as long as we follow GOD, things will work for our good.

Verse 98 of Psalm 119, GOD’s commands give me wisdom; more wisdom than those who hate me and mean me harm. This is because HIS orders never leave me. They stay with me; always instructing, guiding, and making a way for me to continue to elude the enemy. Those against me can never prevail because GOD tells me what to do and I am saved every time.

Verse 101, I don’t do evil or anything that goes against GOD because I need to keep HIS word. I need to follow the directions of my Father that lead to life not death. I’m not trying to appear good, holy, perfect, or any of those things. I’m just doing what GOD told me to do because I get understanding and wisdom from what HE says. Why would I leave good instruction for ignorance and nonsense? I’ve had enough of bumping my head; been there done that.

Verse 104, GOD’s commands help me to understand everything I’m going through. They help me to make sense of my life and this world; therefore, I hate anything false. I hate lies and people trying to run game. I hate slick talk and deceptive speech designed to get me off the path GOD has me on. There comes a time when we have to love the things of GOD more than the things of this world. When that happens, you’ll let nothing get in between you and the Father.

Verse 105, GOD’s word lights my feet and my path. I see where I am at right now, and where I’m going. GOD’s word is life. It is oxygen. It is food and water, sustenance. Without it, we are lost.

It is my prayer that you engage with GOD’s word today. Fill your mind with it; saturate your soul with the LORD’s instructions, and be blessed beyond your imagination (Ephesians 3:20). In Jesus’ name, amen.

How to be Saved

Romans 10: 9-13

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (KJV).

9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. 11 As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” 12 Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (NLT).

Say the welcoming word to God—“Jesus is my Master”—embracing, body and soul, God’s work of doing in us what he did in raising Jesus from the dead. That’s it. You’re not “doing” anything; you’re simply calling out to God, trusting him to do it for you. That’s salvation. With your whole being you embrace God setting things right, and then you say it, right out loud: “God has set everything right between him and me!” 11-13 Scripture reassures us, “No one who trusts God like this—heart and soul—will ever regret it.” It’s exactly the same no matter what a person’s religious background may be: the same God for all of us, acting the same incredibly generous way to everyone who calls out for help. “Everyone who calls, ‘Help, God!’ gets help. (MSG).

Romans 5:8

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (KJV)

8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (NLT)

It is your belief that saves you, family. If you believe, you will speak what you believe and not be ashamed or embarrassed to do so, whether you are alone or among others. Simply talk to GOD. Say aloud to God:

“I confess all my sin, known and unknown, and ask You, GOD to forgive me. I believe Jesus was born of a virgin, crucified, died for my sins, and rose from the dead. I want Jesus to come into my heart to make me new in Him. I believe Jesus is Lord over my life and over everything that exists. Thank You, GOD for Your forgiveness. Thank You, Jesus, for making me Your own. Amen.”

You are now saved. You may not feel different or you may. Just know that the internal change is taking place once you uttered that prayer in faith. Day by day, you will begin to be transformed into whom GOD wants and created you to be. You will care more about the things of GOD than your own personal desires, and you will want to share the word of GOD when you have the opportunity. Begin to read your bible daily, and learn about GOD's will for your life. If you are not already a member of a local church, I encourage you to pray and allow GOD to guide you to the right fellowship for you. The pastor will help you grow in your gifts and talents so that you can begin to use them for GOD’s glory, and you and the other members will encourage and help each other along this journey with GOD.
